Education and Training
Local History Certificate with the University of Limerick
The ‘Local History’ Certificate commences in mid-September and we host it from the Irish Workhouse Centre. Lectures are held Wednesdays, weekly, from 7pm to 10pm. The cost of the course will be c. €650 and it is a FETAC 6 fully-accredited certificate.
– The course will begin in mid-September with an ‘Introduction to local history: approaches, definitions and presentation’ module.
– The next module will focus on the location and categorisation of sources (primary and secondary etc).
– In the Spring, the course widens to encompass the principal non-written sources (visual, oral history, folklore, material culture, the landscape; archaeology, maps, etc).
– Each student will complete a final project based on research into primary source material relevant to an understanding of a particular topic in local history.
– There are ample supports in place, tutors are available to guide and mentor on all projects, and the existing class sailed through and have their graduation next month.
National, Secondary and Third-level Education Tours Provided.
We offer interactive education programs on the workhouses of Ireland. Through the eyes of a famine girl, Mary O’Hara and her family, we offer an insight to what life was like in the Portumna Workhouse.
