Friends of the Irish Workhouse Centre

The Irish Workhouse Centre Friends “Window to the Past” Programme

The Irish Workhouse Centre, Portumna is a non-for-profit initiative.

People who would like to contribute to the project can do so by giving €2 per week.  Payment can be made by standing order, cheque or cash.   People overseas can also become a Friend.  Please contact the Irish Workhouse Centre for further information.

Free Admission to Visitor Centre

Friends receive a life long Friend’s Card.  This allows free admission to the Visitor Centre to the person or in the case of a couple, two people who have signed the back of the card.

Also people may give their cards to friends or relatives as each Friend’s Card can be used for up to 10 visits free of charge per calendar year.

Have your support as a Friend acknowledged at a Window

There are 280 windows in the workhouse.  As these are repaired, as the project progresses, a plaque will be fixed beside each window, acknowledging the individual Friends support. So if you would like to become a Friend,  there will be a plaque with your name beside one of the windows.

Friends are acknowledged in the Friends’ Book at the Centre.

Please note the above applies to people who remain life long Friends.

Free Admission is to the Visitors Centre and not to special events that may take place at the workhouse.
